More prototyping
Kirsti hosted a ‘Made from scratch’ last night. This prototype is much more faithful to the concept. Kirsti hosted the dinner for her friends based on the information I had given her about the dinner. It sounds like it went well. :) Update with photos/videos coming soon.

Post review - making sense of things
Why am I creating Food experiences? People are aware and have a lot of information. There are many websites and books and campaigns by experts instructing them about what they need to be doing. But people are settled into a pattern and are resistant to having it disrupted. For those who are in a “coma” about the way they eat their food - The food challenge are meant to disrupt the...

Serendipitous encounter
When I was out and about in the city offering people cupcakes, I met Christopher from Din Baghave (which means ‘Your Backyard’ in Danish) which is a very exciting young company that sources and sells vegetables from farms around Copenhagen. They are all about local, seasonal food.   I’m really excited to spend some time with them and perhaps even do some experiments with them...

Advice
Possible outcomes - 1. A speculative vision of what the project accomplishes and what it would be like 2. A larger, grander final experiment/experience that is a culmination of all the experiments I have done. It can be extraordinary on different levels - the number of people, the venue, the layers of interaction. It should be documented in a manner that it can be shared and understood by those...

Impromptu discussion
Talking to David and Ulrik today, we just ended up talking about my projects and it was really helpful. Here is some of what I learnt - 1. Everyone has a food story to share - something that was drummed into them as children and is still a part of their relationship to food. 2. My simple idea of - going back to what we know, appreciating cooking & food traditions - is powerful and...

It's time to experiment
Developing the ideas that came up in the brainstorming session on Thursday I thought up a whole bunch of large and small ideas for experiences and experiments. Wheedling down to the ones that feel the strongest, I now have 3 that I feel good about. A day of ruminating on them hasn’t made me feel any different. I hope to carry out these experiments over the next week and half.

Storming!
The bunch of us who are here decided to have a brainstorming session. It proved really valuable for me. I hope the same is true for the rest. The ideas I asked people to brainstorm around were: What could you learn about food from your grandparents? &  How would you like to learn this? There were some great ideas we came up with. SKILLS: A lot of people would like to learn skills like slow...

What could you learn about food from your...
I arrived at this question today. I realized that a many of the principles of sustainable eating – eating fresh aka local, eating seasonal, eating less meat, preserving seasonal food, just cooking from basic ingredients – these are things my grandparents know and understand well.  These are the traditions and knowledge are not making their way down to us though.

First experiences of being (practically)...
Today I stopped by the Illum bakery in the city center to grab a quick take away lunch. There were sandwiches, salads, pizza and some other things. However, just one was vegetarian, a pizza slice with artichokes and feta. It did make the decision-making process extremely easy for me but I was rather taken aback that such a reputed eatery in the heart of the city would offer vegetarians really no...

Challenges of summer
My diet growing up was largely vegetarian with meat being something that we ate when we went out or something my mother made when we were having guests for dinner. So eating vegetarian is very easy for me. I dont have any meat cravings or feel any absence in my diet, most of the time… Recently we had a big barbecue in the park for the whole class and extended CIID community. There are...

Respecting meat
I watched the TV show ‘River Cottage’ by British chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstal which documents his life becoming a small holdings owner where he grows his own fruit and veg and breeds animals. There was a section where a vegetarian was being trained as a butcher’s apprentice. Butchering meat sounds unpleasant to a dedicated meat eater, so for a vegetarian it must have been...

I am (now) a very picky meat eater
I have always believed that it is natural and normal to eat meat and that being vegetarian is not necessarily the correct or better way to live. But I have learnt a lot through this project about the way most of the meat we consume today is being produced. In industrial farms of enormous scale where animal and human lives are given little respect. The reason these industrial scale facilites exist...

Possibly my longest post ever.
Earlier I posted some images of my attempts to make sense of all the reading and thinking I had been doing. At the time the connections and links were unclear to me. I tried to solidify the thoughts I had about these different areas by writing them down. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =  The question I have framed is - what makes for a fulfilling life?  In...

Take a deep breath
My first meeting with my thesis advisor Joachim Halse couldn’t have come at a better time. Having to present to him what I had done in the last 2 weeks was a great way to recount, organise and assess things for myself.  In all of that chaos there was some order. I always find conversation a great tool for reflection. It helps me synthesize things and find connections that can elude me for...

Dumpster diving
Since late April one of my fellow CIIDers, Dean McNamee, has been dumpster diving for food. I must say that the concept was completely new to me and initially sounded a bit gross (for lack of a better word). But now that I have seen the “produce” I am more than surprised and quite won over by the idea. It just makes sense. That food which is so easily thrown away took enormous amounts...

“What makes for a fulfilling life?”
– That is the question I am starting my final project with. I realize it is very broad and vague, but I hope that starting with the big picture will lead to an interesting place.

Disruption of volcanic proportion
Because of the wonderful Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull spewing ash into the atmosphere and grounding flights in northern Europe, we have had to postpone our industry project with Velux. This definitely counts as unforeseen circumstances.

Update!
Yet again, I have fallen behind… A lot of updates are needed! 1. We finished the Service Design module with Chris Downs and John Holager from Live|Work. After killing our first idea of an application for managing microdebts between friends and acquaintances, we developed Invest in Me, an investment service built on the future potential of people! 2. CIID was on a much needed 2 week Easter...
