Since late April one of my fellow CIIDers, Dean McNamee, has been dumpster diving for food. I must say that the concept was completely new to me and initially sounded a bit gross (for lack of a better word). But now that I have seen the “produce” I am more than surprised and quite won over by the idea.
It just makes sense. That food which is so easily thrown away took enormous amounts of time, energy and human input to be planted, grown, harvested, packaged, shipped and displayed in our neighbourhood supermarket. Some of the food comes from half a planet away. And then it is just thrown away to go into a landfill somewhere or as the case is in Denmark, to be incinerated. Why not rescue it and use it and prevent such waste.
