Dean has been dumpster diving and finding a lot of fruits and vegetables. One of the challenges is actually using all of this food. He distributes it to as many people as possible but when you have 3 crates of bananas, there is a limit to how many people can eat before they go bad.
One solution is to go back to what our grandparents did – when things are plentiful in season, preserve them in. So when they are out of season you can still enjoy them. With our supermarket lives of food shipped from all over the globe, we have lost this sense of seasons and eating things when they grow and not when we want to.
MAKING JAM
When Dean found a large batch of kiwis I decided to make some jam! It was the first time I have made any so I had to look up just about everything from recipes, to sterilizing the jars and canning the jam. It was about 4 hours of literally slaving over a hot stove. But it was a lot of fun and quite successful.
